Key exchange is the traditional method of providing vacation rental guests with physical access to a property by handing over keys in person, through a lockbox, or via a designated third party. While smart locks and digital access codes have become increasingly popular, many properties still rely on physical key exchange due to building restrictions, owner preferences, or local regulations. Key exchange options include in-person handoff, lockbox with a combination code, key drop at a nearby business, or concierge service. Each method has trade-offs in terms of guest convenience, security, and operational overhead.
